It was time to leave wonderful Cambodia on a short, one-hour, Thai Airlines flight to Bangkok. Modern Phnom Penh International Airport is located 7 kilometers/3.8 miles outside the city. Korean Air, Air France, Qatar, Bangkok Airways, China Airlines, and Vietnam Airlines are just a few of the many other airlines who fly to Phnom Penh.
Thai Airlines didn’t begin check in until 6:30p, two hours after our drop off, and “Houston, we have a problem.” The check-in counter wanted to see the credit card used to purchase e-tickets. Well, duh, Viengtravel’s agent issued the ticket and used their credit card. After lengthy conversations with agent and supervisor who made a few telephone calls; problem was settled.
After check-in, all passengers take the escalator upstairs to Immigration for a fast stamp out, followed by a Security check. Phnom Penh International Airport is easy to navigate, user friendly, has attractive shops, restaurants and food choices. Starving and exhausted after that brutal ride from Stung Treng here, Steve and I made a beeline into the very spacious Star Alliance Lounge to snarf dinner and calm nerves with a glass of wine. Don’t know what we’ll do if we ever lose status with United Airlines and aren’t allowed to use lounges (a big perk); probably hang up traveling sandals?
Yes indeed, we do fly Economy Class the great majority of the time. Travel = maximizing whatever money a person has to afford travel. We’ve taken overnight trains, sat in airports for 6-10 hours, and done whatever it takes to go the distance. Thai Airlines is a pleasure even sitting in Economy on an Airbus (video). Only they, and other foreign airlines, can manage to completely feed all passengers, and pass out immigration documents on a 50 minute flight!
Welcome to Thailand!
